When I opened my eyes, it was just like any other day. The first thing I did, was close them again. I had always loved to sleep in. I could never bare the thought of leaving the comfort of my bed to the cold, harsh weather right away, yet alone to come to school. â€Å"I can only delay the inevitable† I thought, as I regrettably rolled out of bed to begin the long day ahead. I made my way towards the bathroom to brush my teeth, making sure to say hello to my dog, Gabe, as I passed by. Upon entering the bathroom, I reached for my toothbrush and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. My brown hair was a mess as always, but I could barely tell without my glasses on. My hazel eyes pierced the mirror, standing out like a bright light in the dark room, but they were slightly covered by my glasses. I made note of my messy hair as I continued to brush my teeth, and once I was finished, left the room. Upon leaving the bathroom, I went down the stairs to eat breakfast. Process Distilled water is water purified by boiling the water and collecting the steam. The steam is recovered by condensing the cleaner water vapor into a fresh container. The distillation process removes most impurities, so it is an effective method of water treatment. Distilled Water for Drinking Water Water distillation dates back at least to the time of Aristotle. It has been used to desalinate seawater since at least 200 AD, as outlined by Alexander of Aphrodisias. Drinking water usually is distilled twice or double distilled to ensure high purity. The winters in Northern Minnesota are harsh, cold, and dangerous. The average snowfall for the state falls between 30 and 38 inches per year. Within the past five years, the temperatures have been known to fluctuate greatly; from warmer temperatures during the day, to below freezing through the night. These temperature changes can cause dangerous road conditions, such as black ice, which can harmful or even deadly. Along with the weather changes, the county road commissions throughout Minnesota have been making changes as well; they have, significantly, cut back on the amount of time and effort that they spend plowing, sanding, and/or salting the roads. These cut backs may seem minor, but they are resulting in many unnecessary accidents and less than desirable driving conditions. This forces residents to ask the question, should Minnesota’s country road commissions take on more responsibility? I believe that the best solution to this problem would be to designate specific times of the day, during the winter months, to plowing/sanding/salting, and require that more attention be paid to the roads when the weather conditions are dangerous. I think that if the residents of Thief River County, and potentially the entire of state Michigan, were provided with a safer commute, they would feel more loyalty and respect towards those who work for our county. After the state of Minnesota implemented many budget cuts, funding was cut too many important organizations, one being the county road commissions. Our government officials fail to recognize all that entails these budget cuts. Not only have the driving conditions suffered, but parking lot conditions have also. The handicap parking spaces are completely disregarded, causing handicapped and elderly citizens to risk injury by parking or walking through snow and ice (Schneider, 2001). Not only are those who drive themselves affected by the winter road conditions, but those who utilize public transportation are affected as well. If the road commission is slow to take care of roads, then public transportation (e. g. buses, taxis, etc†¦) will be late to pick up its passengers. This, in turn, will make its passengers late for work and may cause them to lose their jobs. Also, some may argue that there is always a risk while driving, and more time spent taking care of the roads during the winter will not lessen the risk. However, M. Peden states, â€Å"While in practical terms it may not be possible completely to eliminate all risk, it is possible to reduce the exposure to risk of severe injury and to minimize its intensity and consequences (2004). † Peden’s quote states exactly the point that I am trying to prove. I understand that the risk will not be completely taken away; however, the hances can be significantly reduced if the roads are plowed and sanded. It is clear to see that the budget cuts are more of a risk, and the increase in accidents and the need for tow trucks have cost the state even more money. Marina Fulton, of Kingston, has a thirty-minute commute to her office and when the weather is at its worse, Fulton has to leave an extra hour early just to make it to work on time (2008). Obviously, the winters of Northern Minnes ota are going to be dangerous, even though the road conditions could be improved. However, if the roads were properly taken care of, residents would have more time to get to their jobs and feel safer on their way. I believe that if the T. R. county road commission were to implement the suggestions in this proposal in January of 2009, they’d be able to get a â€Å"head start† on the months in which winter is its harshest. Linda Boonstrand, of Thief River, stated â€Å"I would definitely feel safer driving with my two young daughters if the road commission were to take care of the roads more thoroughly (2008). With the advances in technology that our country is continuing to make, road commissions should be able to find out when inclement weather in on its way and be prepared to take care of the roads (Committee on Weather Research for Transportation, 2004). In conclusion, I am calling upon my county to spend more time taking care of the roads during the winter months, especially more during inclement weather. I believe that the extra time spent clear ing/sanding/salting the roads throughout the winter will result in a safer and happier community. H.G. Wells Literary Criticism Essay Herbert George Wells was born in Bromley, Kent, a suburb of London, to a lower-middle-class family. He attended London University and the Royal College of Science where he studied zoology. One of his professors instilled in him a belief in social as well as biological evolution which Wells later cited as the important and influential aspect of his education. This is how it all began. Maybe without this professor Wells wouldnt be the famous author he is today. Most of Wells novels are science fiction and have a great deal of some kind of human society theme, or Darwinism in mind. It is a theme that is seen in his most famous science fiction writings. H.G. Wells seems to convey a sense of Darwinism and change in the future of society in his major works. Wells has been called the father and Shakespeare of science fiction. He is best known today for his great work in science fiction novels and short stories. He depicted stories of chemical warfare, world wars, alien visitors and even atomic weapons in a time that most authors, or even people for that matter, were not thinking of the like. His stories opened a door for future science fiction writers who followed the trend that Wells wrote about. His most popular science fiction works include The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, and The Island of Doctor Moreau. His first novel, The Time Machine, was an immediate success. By the time the First World War had begun his style of writing and novels had made him one of the most controversial and best-selling authors in his time. In the story The Time Machine, Wells expresses his creativity with images of beauty, ugliness and great details. In this novel Wells explores what it would be like to travel in this magnificent and beautiful machine. The criterion of the prophecy in this case is influenced by the theory of natural selection. (Beresford, 424) He uses Darwins theory in the novel and relates it to the men living in the novel. The men are no longer struggling to survive, they have all adapted and there is no termination of the weak. It had practically ceased. His fascination with society in biological terms is also mentioned, Shows Wells horizon of sociobiological regression leading to cosmic extinction, simplified from Darwinism. (Beresford, 424) He took the idea from Darwin but instead of making it survival of the fittest, the weak have already died off and only the fittest are left, which leads to the extinction. His fascination with Darwinism was one that had not been thought by many in that time, because there were questions of ethics and religion. From The Time Machine on, it was generally recognized that no writer had so completely or so perceptively taken Darwin to heart. (McConnell, 442) He wasnt the first man to realize and acknowledge the importance of Darwins theory for the future of civilization, but he is said to be the first to assimilate that theory into his stories. Concerning society with the future, The Time Machine is said to be seen as a prophecy of the effects of rampant industrialization on that class conflict that was already, in the nineteenth, century a social powder keg. (McConnell, 438) Wells always touched upon the subject of society, the destruction of it, and how it would become in the future due to this destruction and chaos. His view on society was that the classes would clash and ultimately they might become two races, mutually uncomprehending and murderously divided, (Suvin, 435) His predictions of future societies were all much alike, war-torn class problems, much like what is seen now a days. The narrator of The Time Machine says of the Time Traveler that he saw in the growing pile of civilization only a foolish heaping that must inevitably fall back upon and destroy its makers in the end. (McConnell, 439) This is another reference to societys survival of the fittest, as he depicts civilization tearing at each other, and in the end, doing away with their creator. Not all of his predictions and social clashes were horrid and horrendous with violence.
